LG Optimus Pad 3D

The new LG Optimus Pad comes with an 8.9″ touchscreen and a built-in 3D camera. LG’s new tablet has the latest version of Google’s Android mobile OS on board, called Honeycomb, and a smoking fast Nvidia Tegra 2 1GHz dual-core processor.

The tablet has a resolution of 1280 x 768 and images/video taken with the 3D camera can be viewed on 3D televisions or shared on the Web via your favorite video website (eg YouTube 3D).

LG used an applied parallax barrier technology to create this glasses-free 3D effect on the display. This 3D technology puts a series of slits on the front of the LCD screen which deflect light in a way that ensures a user’s left and right eye see different images, which will then create the illusion of depth for the 3D image.

Will the iPad 3 Go 3D?

Not sure if you’ve heard the latest news spreading around the Internet but rumor (courtesy the RCR Wireless blog) has it that Apple’s ultra-popular tablet will feature a 3D display. It’s unclear at this point if we’re talking about one that won’t require those clunky glasses.

If this proves to be true, Apple’s 3D goals may be similar to those of other tablet makers. Then again, the iPad’s 3D implementation may be quite a unique one. The LG Optimus Pad, which is a 8.9-inch Android Honeycomb slate, can record video in 3D as well as port 3D content via its HDMI port to a 3D TV. And RIM’s BlackBerry PlayBook platform can output 3D visuals to a larger display. What’s your take with 3D on tablets? Is it ‘the next big thing’ or just a passing fad?
